"I teach middle school students that qualify for special education services. Throughout the day, we do a lot of life skills work together, which require patience from my end, and effort and perseverance from my students. They also need to know they are valued, I believe in them, they are safe, and they will get breakfast and lunch every school day. It’s not unlike spending time at the barn with horses that have been rescued, whose trust has to be earned, who require patience, consistent responses of compassion from their caregivers, who need to know they are valued, they are safe, and the hay never runs out.
"Meeting Jo Anne through a mutual friend who told me about Jo Anne’s need for assistance with the rescue owned wild burro and her year old jenny was nothing short of a miracle for me. Not long ago, I spent the summer assisting at a horse rescue out of state. I learned a great deal about the basic needs of the horses, and was missing my daily interactions with them terribly. I had no idea just fifteen months after I returned I would have the opportunity to use the experience I acquired to help with the everyday barn chores for Saving Baby Equine Charity right here in Michigan!
"Reading Saving Baby captivated me. Not only did I learn about Saving Baby Equine Charity, the truth reflected in the story of Baby’s life and beyond compelled me to the responsibility we all have to do justice. It’s in the doing, no matter how small or how large we perceive our part to be, that has the potential to make a difference, even for one horse. I have never had a horse of my own, but every minute I spend helping at the barn, I am living my lifelong dream."
