Five donkeys rescued from
the New Holland Auction
Little Longears Miniature Donkey Rescue in Westminster, Maryland, specializes in miniature donkey rescue. From their website: “…we realize that many people simply cannot afford to care for their little donkey any longer, for whatever reason, and we want to provide a resource for people to be able to surrender their donkey to us, knowing we will work to adopt them out to a loving home.” And also from their website: “We see many of them [donkeys] go to the auction selling for ridiculously low prices leaving us wondering whether they are going to good homes, or ending up in the hands of unscrupulous buyers and possibly ending up going to slaughter (YES, even minis can end up being sold for meat!).”
The end of November, 2014, Little Longears Miniature Donkey Rescue attended the notorious New Holland Auction and successfully bid on five miniature donkeys. These little ones were brought to the auction by their breeder needing to downsize his herd. Most of the five had feet in terrible condition and were obese (miniature donkeys are extremely easy keepers and their diets must be carefully attended to, as obesity can quickly lead to the painful and life-threatening condition of laminitis). They also had little handling prior to being brought to the auction. Upon arrival to the safety of the rescue farm, they were terrified and would not let anyone near them. But the folks at Little Longears Miniature Donkey Rescue are patiently working with these little “donks” and are seeing progress every day!
We at Saving Baby Equine Rescue were excited to provide Little Longears Miniature Donkey Rescue with a generous donation towards the care of these precious five little donkeys!...once again, made possible by the donations of SBEC supporters! THANK YOU!
Here they are! - the five little rescued donkeys, still with their auction stickers attached...and their wonderful new lives are just beginning!
